Photo ID Requirements for Air Travel Within the United States

All travelers flying on a domestic flight must present a photo ID issued at the state or federal level, such as a state driver’s license that meets Real ID requirements, military ID or the United States passport. In addition to these commonly used forms of identification, passport cards, trusted traveler cards (such as the NEXUS, SENTRI and FAST cards issued by the Department of Homeland Security), border-crossing cards, Native American tribal ID cards, airline or airport photo ID cards issued in compliance with TSA regulations and transportation worker ID credentials also are acceptable forms of identification.

As part of the Secure Flight initiative and in order to comply with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) regulations, it is mandatory that all airline passengers provide their full legal first name, middle name (if applicable), legal last name, date of birth and gender as it appears on their non-expired, government-issued photo ID used for travel identification.  Reservations made without this information may be canceled. Not required, but optional if previously issued, will be a Redress Number and Known Traveler Number.

The TSA has incorporated privacy laws and practices into all areas of the Secure Flight program.  The information gathered is a requirement of the TSA and DHS for purposes of watch list screening.  For more detailed information regarding Secure Flight, please check the Transportation Security Administration or the Department of Homeland Security.  Note: You may also be asked to provide this information during check-in at the airport.

Luggage Restrictions/Tags

Expect a high level of security and enforcement of policies for both checked luggage and carry-on luggage. You should check with your originating airport and/or airline carrier for details regarding the most current luggage policies. Luggage fees may apply and if applicable, can be found on your e-ticket receipt.

Luggage Tags

The U.S. Transportation Security Administration requires that all checked luggage be clearly identified on the outside. Note: You might also want to include full identification information inside each piece of luggage, as well.

Checked Luggage

Policies vary by airline, but many airlines charge for every piece of luggage checked. The fee may vary, and some carriers charge less for bags checked in online versus at the airport. In addition, if your luggage exceeds the carrier’s specified weight allowance, you will be charged for the extra weight or asked to eliminate items from your luggage.

It is important to contact your specific airline carrier(s) for detailed information regarding their luggage policy. Note: There is not a designated carrier for this trip, so be sure to refer to your airline’s individual website for details regarding checked luggage weight limits and possible fees for checked bags. Baggage fees should be expensed to your own cost center.

Carry-On Luggage

Most airlines limit carry-on luggage to one piece plus a personal item, such as a purse, briefcase or laptop. Airports are strictly observing policies regarding items that cannot be included in carry-on bags. For detailed information and the latest listing of all prohibited and permitted carry-on items (and how to pack them), U.S. citizens should refer to the Transportation Security Administration.

Locked Luggage

Security officials perform searches of checked luggage.  The U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) urges travelers to not lock their checked luggage unless using TSA-approved locks.  If your luggage is locked with a lock that is not TSA-approved, TSA screeners are authorized to cut the lock to inspect the bag and will not replace the lock.  If using an approved lock, the screeners have master keys, so they may unlock and inspect your luggage without the risk of the lock being cut off.  You may purchase approved locks – look for the mark on the packaging – at travel stores and airports. For more information, including how to order them visit the Transportation Security Administration.

Electronic Equipment

Security staff at the checkpoints may ask you to turn on any cellular phone, laptop, tablet, CD or DVD player or hand-held game device that you are carrying with you. You may want to limit the electronic devices you carry, and make sure the batteries work.

Frequent Flyer Guidelines

Frequent flyer programs vary from airline to airline.  Please be aware of the following general guidelines: Availability of frequent flyer upgrades is extremely limited.

Due to negotiated airfares, the use of your frequent flyer airline or frequent flyer upgrade may incur additional costs or may not be possible. To receive mileage credit, the name on your frequent flyer membership must match the name on your airline.
